The Generations

The first generation

The legacy of the present day Karimi’s Studio started in the early 1880 when our ancestors started business under the name and title of HA Mirza & Sons, Photographers of Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, India. The photographer of H.A Mirza & Sons were produced as photographers and postcards, Islamic monuments, including Makkah,Madina & Manasik e Hajj, Mughal architecture and Colonial-era landmarks published and exhibit in Delhi, Peshawar and Germany.

The second generation

Haji Mehmood Mirza, our grandfather, migrated from India and opened a studio in Saddar, Karachi under the name of Lighting and Photographed Studio. This first-ever studio specialised in black and white photography. In 1973, our father opened “Karimi’s Studio” in Karimabad with the help of our grandfather, Haji Mehmood Mirza.

The Third generation

The heritage of Mirza family to the height of fame and recognition, Nasir Mirza , Mumtaz Mirza, Akhter Mirza, and their first cousin Mirza Khursheed Masood become renowned commercial photographers and project Pakistan on various international forums.

The fourth generation

Mumtaz Mirza established Karimi’s Studios in 1973 and first introduced the color darkroom technique in Pakistan, he worked extensively on transparencies, medium format films and 135mm negatives.
Mohsin Mirza and Ahsan Mirza s/o Mumtaz Mirza expended their family business and now they have four studios in Karachi. Currently, Karimi Studios is the torch bearer of this iconic family, with sheer commitment and a valuable skill, Karimi’s Studio is taking the legacy to the new dimensions.
